The Summer Festival of Learning 14th June - 2nd July 2021 On Campus and Beyond

There's a job you want. Maybe it's part time work whilst you study, a summer internship, or maybe it's your first step into your graduate career. Whatever it is, you'll need to show your potential employer why they should hire you. So, what are you good at? It can be really hard to talk about our own strengths and qualities, especially in a job application where talking yourself up is important. It can feel embarrassing to boast about the things you’re good at, or difficult to figure out what it is you’re good at in the first place. The thing is, we all have strengths; things that we’re passionate about, special skills that make us unique and proficiencies that employers are on the look out for – the trick is to pinpoint what they are and to get good at showing them off.

Maybe you’re a great problem solver – cutting through the noise to find a simple solution, or maybe you’re cool in a crisis – able to get on with the important bits when someone else might panic. Perhaps you’re a whizz with data, or have an eye for design? Maybe you’re really persuasive, or good at getting along with people? You might be creative, or analytical, a born leader, or a stickler for process and able to follow instructions to the letter. You have strengths that are part of your personality, and strengths that you’ve learned in your work, or whilst here at university. You’ll have things you know you’re good at, and things you’ve probably never really thought about before that you’re actually great at.

Identifying your strengths is a skill in itself, and it’s usually something you get better at over time. The more job applications you fill out, the more drafts of your CV you complete, the more experience you have, the easier it will be to pick out the things that make you special.

The Strengths Profile Assessment is a great tool to help you get a jump start on spotting your strengths. You’ll take a 20 minute quiz, answering questions about who you are as a person, what you love to do, and how you’d react in certain scenarios. There are no wrong answers – the assessment will just build a picture of what your personal strengths are, and help you see yourself from an employer’s perspective.

The Strengths Profile Workshop will help you interpret the results of your assessment, figure out what they mean, and get some tips on how to best show off your strengths and skills in a CV, application, or interview. This is a valuable opportunity to get real insight into your own capabilities, using a tool that has been fully funded by the university for the festival, that you would otherwise have to pay for.

We have Strengths Profile Workshops running once a week during the Summer Festival, but places are limited so it’s best to get moving quickly and book your spot before space runs out. Once you’ve booked, you’ll be sent a link to complete the assessment which you’ll need to complete before the workshop event.

Strengths Profile Workshop Dates: Wednesday 16th June – 10am – 12pm

Tuesday 22nd June – 2pm – 4pm

Wednesday 30th June – 2pm – 4pm
