In-Depth Synopsis:
The Dane takes place on the weathered coast of 9th century Northumbria. After a storm, an Anglo-Saxon fisherman discovers a shipwrecked Danish raider lying unconscious in the surf. He carries the Dane back to his home and treats his injuries, putting aside his initial hostility towards a notorious Viking. Upon waking, the Dane expresses fury towards the Saxon for robbing him of a glorious death - but soon becomes grateful for tending to his wounds. The Saxon welcomes his unexpected guest, feeding him, watering him, and enlisting his help in cutting wood and catching fish. He soon notices that things have begun to disappear - candles, fishing hooks, coins - the seeds of suspicion are sown. Nevertheless, the Saxon resolves to assume the best, giving the Dane a second chance and turning a blind eye. One evening the pair bond over mead and conversation, and the Dane reiterates his gratitude. Once the candles have gone out, however, the facade is dropped, and the Dane slips into the night, retrieving a stashed sack of stolen items. He steals the Saxon’s rowing boat and drags it to a familiar beach, over which dawn is breaking. A successful escape seems within his grasp, and the raider sets about launching the vessel - when he is interrupted with a blow to the face from a wooden oar. The Saxon, having feigned sleep and pursued his guest, stands over the Viking, who lies unconscious in the same surf from which he was rescued.
